Paving & Resurfacing

Many will think that an asphalt surface starts when the first asphalt load arrives at the job.  On the contrary, preparation for the asphalt surface starts before that.  Many also believe that the asphalt is the most important part of the project.  But that is not true either.  The greatest factor in creating an asphalt surface starts with the preparation work the is done before the asphalt pavement arrives in the truck.

When we begin a concrete asphalt paving project in Troy, OH, we make sure to evaluate the existing site.  We also ask you to let us know how you would like to use the paved area.  For instance, a paved area for a house will be used much differently than a paved lot at a commercial shopping area.  We will take the effort into understanding these things before the project starts.  We will look at drainage patterns, the underlying soil conditions, and the expected usage of the asphalt.

For a new asphalt surface to maintain its life, we have to look at the excavation and grading around the project.  We have to ensure that the majority of the water drainage around the parking lot will be draining away from the asphalt.  We do this to prevent water damage to the asphalt.  When water gets trapped on top of the asphalt, there are a range of problems we are trying to avoid.  Selecting or changing the drainage patterns around the asphalt will reduce these problems into the future.

After the grading work is completed, we will have to look at the stone base selected for the project.  This layer serves as the foundation for the overlaying asphalt pavement.  Without this base material lying in a solid condition, the pavement will wear earlier over time and it could create low spots in the pavement.  The low spots will again trap the water.  One of the greatest items in a suitable concrete base material is the compaction.  We will use the proper techniques and will use testing to measure the amount of compaction used before the asphalt is placed.

Finally after all of this work, we are now ready for the asphalt to be delivered.  Once the asphalt is placed, we will use our specialized equipment to compact the asphalt.  The compaction is again important in this process.  Proper compaction will make sure that air voids are eliminated from the asphalt.  Removal of these voids will again help prevent water from destroying the asphalt.

Fortunately for some property owners, a complete asphalt replacement is not necessary.  Based on our initial investigation, we will be able to determine if resurfacing will be an appropriate solution.  In this process, we will install a new layer of asphalt over the existing pavement.  Before we do this, we will inspect the existing asphalt.  The inspection will determine how much of the asphalt will have to be removed before we place the new asphalt.

Surface cracking, fading, and minor imperfections are signs that a resurfacing process might be a good fit.  One of the biggest questing is the strength of the existing asphalt.  Our inspection will determine if this is possible.

As we all know for living in Ohio, our weather can place a significant amount of stress on our asphalt surfaces.  The terribly hot summers, cold winters with snow and ice, and our freeze thaw cycles will affect the asphalt over time.  This is why we also stress our repair and maintenance programs for your surfaces.  Throughout the life of your asphalt, we are here to make sure it lasts as long as possible.

Keep in mind that our ultimate goal is to provide you with a smooth asphalt driveway that will last a long time.  Whether this is for a new driveway or replacing a parking lot, we are here to figure out the best plan forward.  At the end of the day, you will receive a flat smooth asphalt surface for your property.
